Superman Annual # 1 (Volume 4), published with a cover date of January 2017, is a notable standalone story from the DC Universe Rebirth era. Released on November 30, 2016, it explores the internal and external conflicts of the "Post-Crisis" Superman as he attempts to find his place in a new world.

Core Plot: "Earth to Earth, Ashes to Ashes"

The story centers on a direct confrontation between Superman and Swamp Thing.

  • The Conflict: Clark Kent notices the crops on his family farm in Hamilton County are mysteriously withering despite adequate rain. Investigation reveals that nature itself is dying around him because he is a "vibrational aberration"—a Superman from a different universe whose presence is causing a disturbance in "The Green" (the elemental force of all plant life).
  • The Battle: Swamp Thing (Alec Holland) confronts Superman, viewing him as an outsider who doesn't belong on this Earth. This leads to a visually stunning battle where Swamp Thing attempts to "bury" Superman to protect the planet.
  • The Resolution: During the fight, Swamp Thing merges with Superman to look into his memories. He discovers that the Earth is rejecting Superman because Superman still views himself as an outsider. To restore the balance of nature, Superman must fully accept this new world as his true home.

Creative Team

The issue is highly regarded for its artistic quality and emotional depth.

  • Writers: Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason.
  • Artist: Jorge Jiménez, whose detailed, atmospheric work on the combat and "Green" sequences received critical acclaim.
