Superman Presents: The Krypton Chronicles #1 (September 1981) is the premiere issue of a historic, three-issue Bronze Age limited mini-series. This series serves as the definitive deep-dive into the complex genealogy, culture, and ancient history of the House of El on Superman's doomed homeworld.

Core Plot & Synopsis

The issue, titled "The Search for Superman's Roots," begins in Metropolis. Media mogul Morgan Edge calls Clark Kent and Perry White into his office at Galaxy Broadcasting. Edge wants to produce the definitive television biography on Superman and assigns a reluctant Clark the task of investigating the Man of Steel’s ancestry.

Realizing that even he is somewhat in the dark about his distant family tree, Clark slips away and flies to the Fortress of Solitude. There, he meets up with his cousin, Supergirl (Kara Zor-El). Together, they board a spacecraft and travel to the planet Rokyn—the world where the shrunken bottle city of Kandor was recently restored to its normal physical size.

Upon arriving, they are warmly greeted by surviving Kryptonians, including Supergirl’s parents (Zor-El and Allura) and their cousin Van-Zee. Van-Zee leads Superman and Supergirl into a grand, high-tech memorial vault dedicated to the history of the House of El. As they walk past majestic statues, they recount the tales of their prominent ancestors:

  • Gam-El: The brilliant architect who originally designed the sprawling spires of Kryptonopolis.
  • Tala-El: A pioneering historical diplomat and scientist who helped author the planet's early peaceful treaties.
  • Pir-El: A highly respected, legendary military commander who fought to defend their borders during ancient planetary wars.

The peaceful research is violently interrupted in the final panels. A mysterious hidden saboteur sneaks into the vault and opens a containment unit, releasing a rare, ravenous Kryptonian beast known as a Yagrum. The issue ends on a cliffhanger as Superman and Supergirl face down the creature.
