Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 (released August 13, 2025) is a DC Black Label limited series about Superman and Batman investigating four mysterious, never-before-seen varieties of Kryptonite. The story is written by W. Maxwell Prince with art by Martín Morazzo and colors by Chris O’Halloran—the creative team behind the acclaimed series Ice Cream Man.

Story Synopsis

The narrative begins with Superman’s automated bots discovering a new "vestigial Krypton" cluster in deep space.

  • The Discovery: Four new colors of Kryptonite are found: Purple, Cobalt, Speckled, and Rainbow. Fearing these remnants of his home planet could fall into the wrong hands, Superman enlists Batman to help him catalog their exact biological and psychological effects.
  • The Experiment: Superman decides to test the new minerals on himself in a controlled environment. In this issue, he is exposed to Purple Kryptonite, which is revealed to scramble his perception of time.
  • The Conflict: Lex Luthor, furious that Superman's bots reached the cluster before his own satellites, begins plotting a massive distraction—a "swamp monster-sized" one—to undermine the Man of Steel's research.

Creative Style and Themes

As a DC Black Label title, the series is aimed at mature readers and features experimental storytelling that blends Silver Age "wacky" concepts with existential themes of trauma and identity.

  • Art and Tone: Reviewers have noted a "timeless" vibe reminiscent of All-Star Superman, though some found Morazzo's detailed, slightly distorted line work to be a jarring but effective fit for the series' "sad, funny, and strange" tone.
  • Core Theme: The series explores the idea that Superman’s own home is literally what hurts him, interrogating the emotional weight of his "lethal legacy"
