Superman Unchained #4 (released September 18, 2013) accelerates the 9-issue blockbuster anniversary miniseries by legendary creators Scott Snyder and Jim Lee. This chapter forces Superman into an uneasy alliance with the military's secret weapon while Lois Lane fights to survive a terrorist hijacking.

The issue alternates between two high-stakes storylines:

The Main Plot: Superman and Wraith Team Up

Following the massive revelation of Wraith—the alien powerhouse who has secretly served the U.S. government since 1938—Superman is forced to work alongside him.

  • The Mission: The anti-technology terrorist group Ascension launches a devastating synchronized strike, taking control of a ring of high-tech military drones and launching nuclear missiles aimed at major global targets.
  • The Conflict: Superman and Wraith fly into action together to intercept the missiles. While their combined might is unstoppable, the mission highlights a deep ideological divide. Wraith views himself as a soldier bound to the state, warning Superman that his independent, global heroism will eventually force the U.S. government to try and destroy him.

The Subplot: Lois Lane's Flight for Survival

Simultaneously, Lois Lane is trapped aboard a suborbital plane that has been hacked and sent into a terrifying, automated freefall by Ascension.

  • The Escape: Showing her signature grit and resourcefulness, Lois manages to find an escape pod and eject just before the plane crashes.
  • The Capture: Lois survives the landing in the desert, only to be immediately captured on the ground by the mysterious leader of Ascension, who holds a bizarre piece of crystalline technology.
