Superman Unchained #5 (released December 31, 2013) marks a heavy philosophical and action-packed turning point in the 9-issue anniversary miniseries by Scott Snyder and Jim Lee. Titled "A Place Between,"the issue challenges Clark Kent's humanity and pits his moral code directly against Wraith’s military compliance.

The narrative weaves through several intense points of view:

The Present: Mechanical Ambush & Ideological Clash

Picking up right after Ascension hacks the world's high-tech defenses, Superman and Wraith track the terrorist signal.

  • The Attack: Before they can find the base, they are violently ambushed by a squad of heavy-duty, dormant Russian combat drones specifically built and programmed to neutralize the Man of Steel.
  • The Fortress Debrief: After destroying the drones, they retreat to the Fortress of Solitude to regroup. There, Wraith reveals secrets about his home planet and attempts to persuade Superman to join General Lane's military operation. Wraith forces Superman to visualize an agonizing reality: watching his human loved ones age and die over the decades while he remains unchanged and totally alone.

The Subplot: Lois Lane Captive

Meanwhile, Lois Lane wakes up trapped at the hidden headquarters of Ascension after her plane crash.

  • The Villain's Speech: The mysterious leader of the faction subjects Lois to a massive monologue detailing Ascension’s true origin and anti-technology agenda.
  • The Ultimate Threat: The villain brings the arc's stakes to an absolute boiling point by preparing to launch every nuclear weapon on Earth.

The Flashback: Leaping into the Unknown

The backup story—beautifully illustrated by guest artist Dustin Nguyen—takes a poignant look back at a young Clark Kent in Smallville.

  • Alongside a young Lana Lang, a fearful Clark stands on top of a towering farm silo, preparing to take a literal leap of faith to test his developing power of flight. This mirrors the present-day narrative theme of being "unchained" from his safe human identity.
  • Creators: Written by Scott Snyder, main penciler Jim Lee, with inks by Scott Williams and backup art by Dustin Nguyen.
