Superman: Up in the Sky #1 is a comic book published by DC Comics with a release date of July 3, 2019. Written by Eisner Award-winner Tom King with breathtaking pencils by Andy Kubert and inks by Sandra Hope, this 6-issue limited series is widely celebrated as a definitive character study of what makes the Man of Steel an enduring symbol of hope.

Origin and Format

The stories in this series were originally published as exclusive backup features in the oversized Superman Giant #3 and #4 anthologies sold at Walmart. Due to high demand from comic book specialty shops, DC Comics reformatted and released them as a standalone, standard-sized six-issue miniseries.

Plot Summary

The overarching narrative presents a simple yet profound question: How far across the galaxy will Superman go to bring a single child home?

The premiere issue begins in Metropolis on a grim note. Following a brutal home invasion that ends in a double murder, a young girl named Alice is abducted by an unknown extraterrestrial threat. Batman investigates the crime scene and pulls Superman into the mystery. While the Dark Knight views the rescue mission as a statistical impossibility given the limitless expanse of the universe, Superman refuses to let Alice become collateral damage. Assisted by Green Lantern, the Man of Steel abandons Earth and flies blindly into deep space toward the planet Rann, determined to save one lonely child regardless of the cosmic cost.
