Swamp Thing # 0, published in September 2012 (cover date November 2012), is a landmark issue in DC's "New 52" relaunch that serves as a horrific origin story for both Alec Holland and his arch-nemesis, Anton Arcane.

Story Synopsis: "To Monsters"

The issue is primarily narrated from the perspective of Anton Arcane, the avatar of The Rot (the force of death and decay). It explores the "New 52" origins of the character and his historical role as a predator of plant and animal avatars.

  • The Hunt for Avatars: Arcane is shown brutally slaughtering various champions of The Green (plant life) and The Red (animal life) throughout history, including jack Crow and Jacob Mullin.
  • The Creation of Swamp Thing: It is revealed that Arcane was directly responsible for the death of Alec Holland. Disguising himself as Alec's wife, Linda Holland, Arcane set Alec’s laboratory ablaze, leading to the chemical explosion that transformed Holland into the Swamp Thing.
  • A Threat Revealed: The story establishes Arcane as a terrifying, nightmare-fuel villain who has manipulated Alec's fate since before he was born, setting the stage for the major "Rotworld" crossover event.
  • Writer: Scott Snyder.
  • Artist: Kano (Pencils/Inks), providing a darker, more visceral art style suitable for Arcane's narrative.
  • Cover Art: Nathan Fairbairn.
