Swamp Thing # 1, released by DC Comics on September 7, 2011, marked the debut of a critically acclaimed series written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Yanick Paquette. Published as part of The New 52 line-wide relaunch, it reintegrated Alec Holland into the mainstream DC Universe after years under the Vertigo imprint.
"Raise Them Bones"
The issue follows a resurrected Alec Holland, now back in human form following the events of Brightest Day. Though he remembers being a plant elemental, he attempts to live a normal life as a construction laborer in Louisiana, seeking to distance himself from his past.
-
The Global Phenomenon: The issue begins with a series of unexplained, nature-derived mass deaths across the globe. Superman tracks Alec down to ask for his botanical expertise on these anomalies, such as birds falling from the sky in Metropolis and dying bats in the Batcave.
-
The Three Forces: The story introduces a delicate balance between three primal powers: The Green (plant life), The Red (animal life), and The Rot (death and decay).
-
A New Evil: While Alec resists returning to his role as the avatar of the Green, a monstrous evil—the avatar of the Rot—is shown rising in the desert, threatening to consume all life.
-
The Confrontation: The issue ends with Alec finding his hotel room overgrown with plants. When he attempts to discard his bio-restorative formula to sever his link to the Green, he is physically confronted by the Swamp Thing itself.
