Sword of the Atom # 1, released on July 30, 1985 (cover-dated October 1985), is the debut of a four-issue limited series that revitalized the classic Silver Age character, Ray Palmer (The Atom). Written by Jan Strnad with art by Gil Kane, this series is famous for its unique blend of science-fiction and sword-and-sorcery adventure.

"Into the Microcosm"

The story picks up after Ray Palmer has been missing and presumed dead for months.

  • The Disappearance: Ray Palmer was investigating a white dwarf star fragment when he vanished, accidentally shrinking to sub-atomic size.
  • The Microverse: Ray finds himself stranded in a hidden world called the "Microcosm," a lush, savage jungle world existing within a single atom of the fragment. In this new world, he is a giant compared to the native inhabitants.
  • A New Life: Ray discovers the "Katarthans," a peaceful tribe of ten-inch-tall humanoids. He soon falls in love with their warrior princess, Deia.
  • The Conflict: The peaceful Katarthans are at war with the "Feitherans," a hostile, avian-like race. Ray, utilizing his scientific knowledge and "giant" size, becomes their unlikely protector, adopting a sword and a new, more aggressive identity as the "Sword of the Atom".
  • The Revelation: At the end of the issue, a shadowy figure is revealed to have been watching Ray, setting up the main conflicts of the miniseries.
  • Ray Palmer (The Atom): The brilliant physicist who becomes a sword-wielding hero in a micro-world.
  • Princess Deia: The warrior princess of the Katarthans and Ray's love interest.
  • The Feitherans: The primary antagonists of the Microcosm.
  • Creative Team: Written by Jan Strnad, with highly detailed art by the legendary Gil Kane.
