Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Blackest Night # 1 (November 2019) is a one-shot reimagining of the landmark Green Lantern event where the Black Lanterns emerge victorious. Written by Tim Seeley with art by Kyle Hotz, the story takes place in a corrupted reality where Sinestro fails to stop Nekron.
The Limbo Lantern
The story diverges from the original event at the pivotal moment when Sinestro receives the power of the White Lantern.
-
The Failure: Instead of sharing the Life Entity's power with his fellow heroes, Sinestro arrogantly attempts to control it alone. His failure allows Nekron to kill the Life Entity and transform the universe into a tide of death.
-
The Transformation: After a failed suicide attempt, Sinestro is caught between life and death, wielding both a Black and White ring as the Limbo Lantern (or Twilight Lantern).
-
The Last Survivors: Twenty-three days after the apocalypse, Sinestro finds the universe's final survivors: Lobo (immune due to his Czarnian biology), Dove (immune as the avatar of Peace), and Mister Miracle (surviving through his unmatched escape skills).
-
The Rebirth: Mister Miracle devises a plan to use Dove as a conduit to reboot the universe using Source energy. After Dove is killed, Sinestro uses Lobo’s regenerating cells as the new conduit. While the plan technically works, it reboots reality with the essence of Lobo, resulting in a violent, bloodthirsty universe that even Sinestro tries to escape.
-
Limbo Lantern (Thaal Sinestro): The protagonist, trapped in a half-dead state.
-
Lobo: The "Main Man," whose healing factor keeps him from becoming a Black Lantern.
-
Dove (Dawn Granger): The only hero immune to the black corruption.
-
Mister Miracle (Scott Free): The strategist who attempts to save reality.
-
Tempus Fuginaut: The cosmic observer who seals off this "blighted" reality from the main multiverse.
