Tales of the Green Lantern Corps #1, published in May 1981, is the first issue of a three-part miniseries that famously expanded the scope of the Green Lantern mythos beyond Earth. It is highly regarded by collectors for introducing the entire 3,600-member Green Lantern Corps together for the first time. 

Plot Synopsis

The story, titled "Challenge!", begins with an unprecedented emergency call from the Guardians of the Universe. 

• The Assembly: For the first time in history, all 3,600 Green Lanterns are summoned to Oa to face a threat to the entire universe.
• The Conflict: The renegade Oan Krona returns and attacks the assembly, causing the Central Power Battery to explode and killing several Lanterns.
• The Stakes: With the Guardians missing and their rings down to a final 24-hour charge, the remaining Corps members must find a way to stop Krona before he recreates the Big Bang and destroys all existence.
• Key Origins: The issue features a retelling of Hal Jordan’s origin and explores the early history of the Guardians and their failed First Manhunters.
