Tales of the New Teen Titans # 1 (1982) is the first issue of a four-part limited series designed to reveal the origin stories of the newest members of the team. This inaugural issue focuses exclusively on the tragic backstory of Victor Stone, better known as Cyborg. 

Plot Summary: "Cyborg"

• A Moment of Respite: The story is framed by a camping trip in the Grand Canyon, where the Titans take a break from their adventures. During a conversation around the campfire, Victor Stone shares the details of his past with his teammates.
• The Promising Athlete: Victor was a gifted high school athlete who struggled to meet the scientific expectations of his parents, Silas and Elinore Stone. He initially fell in with a street gang led by his friend Ron Evers, but eventually pursued a college athletic career.
• The Tragic Accident: While visiting his parents at S.T.A.R. Labs, a scientific experiment involving an interdimensional portal went horribly wrong. A protoplasmic creature escaped, killing his mother and leaving Victor mortally wounded.
• Birth of a Hero: To save his son, Silas Stone used experimental cybernetic technology to rebuild Victor's body. Resentful of his new form and rejected by society, Victor eventually used his abilities to foil a terrorist plot by his former friend Ron Evers at the United Nations, setting him on the path to becoming a hero.
