Tales of the New Teen Titans: Cyborg # 1, released by DC Comics in October 1982, is the first of a four-issue limited series that explored the individual origins of the newest members of the Teen Titans team.
"Piece of the Action"
The issue provides the definitive Silver Age origin story for Victor Stone, the high school athlete whose life-altering accident transforms him into the cyborg hero, Cyborg.
-
Victor Stone's Potential: The story opens on the night of a high school football game, where Victor's parents argue over their son's future. Victor dreams of a college scholarship, while his brilliant scientist parents, Silas Stone and Elinore Stone, want him to focus on academia.
-
The Accident: Victor visits S.T.A.R. Labs where his parents work. A "dimensional portal" experiment goes catastrophically wrong, unleashing a grotesque, protoplasmic monster.
-
A Parent's Sacrifice: The monster kills Victor's mother and severely mauls Victor, leaving him near death. His father, Silas, in a desperate attempt to save his son's life, uses experimental prosthetics and advanced robotics to rebuild Victor.
-
The Transformation: Victor awakens to find most of his body replaced with a bulky, metallic robotic form. The issue focuses on his immediate trauma and self-loathing over his monstrous new appearance.
-
Becoming a Hero: A frustrated and angry Victor runs away from home and hides in Times Square. After witnessing a group of young muggers (a pre-Titans encounter), he decides to use his new abilities to help the innocent, thus beginning his career as Cyborg.
