Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Ion #1 (published in early 2008 with a January cover date) is a pivotal one-shot that concludes Kyle Rayner's time as the host of the Ion entity and establishes the new status quo following the Sinestro Corps War.

Main Plot

The issue begins with Kyle Rayner addressing the Guardians of the Universe to question their recent actions and his own role now that the fear-entity Parallax has been purged from him. The Guardians reveal that Kyle was only ever intended to be a temporary "Torchbearer" for the Ion entity.

They have selected a new host: the powerful Daxamite Sodam Yat. Kyle is tasked with mentoring Sodam on how to handle the near-omnipotent willpower energy. Their discussion is interrupted by an attack from Kyle's long-time nemesis, Alexander Nero, who was freed during the initial assault on Oa.

During the battle, Kyle intentionally fights at less than full power to force Sodam to embrace his new role as Ion. Sodam eventually defeats Nero by seizing control of the villain's own constructs—a tactic Kyle had successfully used in the past. The issue ends with Kyle Rayner returning to his roots as a standard Green Lantern and joining the Corps' elite Honor Guard alongside Guy Gardner.
