Tales to Astonish starring the Sub-Mariner # 1, released by Marvel Comics in 1979 (cover dated December), is a reprint issue that retells the origin story of Prince Namor, originally published a decade earlier.

"Years of Glory, Day of Doom!"

The issue focuses on the complete origin of the Sub-Mariner, chronicling the tragic romance between his parents and his eventual rise as the ruler of Atlantis.

  • Namor's Heritage: The story details how Namor's mother, the Atlantean Princess Fen, fell in love with and married the human sea captain Leonard McKenzie.
  • Betrayal and Birth: The peace between humans and Atlanteans is shattered when the Atlanteans, believing Fen is a prisoner, attack McKenzie's ship, leading to his death. Namor is born of these two worlds, an outcast from both.
  • The Amnesia Period: The comic recaps the period where Namor wandered New York City as an amnesiac derelict in the Bowery, his memories lost after a nervous breakdown.
  • Return to Atlantis: The story culminates with Namor's memory being restored by Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, using his flame powers. This leads Namor to discover the destruction of his Atlantean civilization and vow revenge on the surface world, thus establishing his classic anti-hero persona.
  • Villain: The primary villain in this origin retelling is the original Destiny (Paul Decker), who traps Namor under a block of ice early in the narrative, allowing for the flashback sequence to unfold.
  • Original Writer: Roy Thomas
  • Original Artist (Pencils): John Buscema
  • Cover Artist (1979 Reprint): John Buscema
