Tangent Comics: Tales of the Green Lantern #1, published in September 1998, is a one-shot issue from DC’s second wave of the Tangent Universe event. Unlike the traditional Green Lantern, this version—created by Dan Jurgens—features a mysterious woman with a magical lantern that can temporarily resurrect the dead to resolve their unfinished business.

Plot & Story Structure

The issue follows an anthology format where the Green Lantern introduces three different, potentially contradictory, origin stories for herself:

  • "Brightest Light": In this tale, adventurer Lois Lane is murdered by Booster Gold and his first mate Kilowog after she refuses to exploit the mutated Sea Devils. The spirits of the dead resurrect her as the Green Lantern to seek vengeance.
  • "Darkest Light": This version presents the Green Lantern as a survivor of a war criminal named Darkside. After the cybernetic vigilante Manhunter accidentally kills Darkside's twin sister, the sister's spirit helps defeat Darkside and passes the lantern's power to the new host.
  • "Know Evil": The final story depicts Zatanna as a necromancer seeking entry into the Dark Circle. She attempts to steal the lantern from its previous keeper, an aging pirate named Jason Blood, but a miscast spell traps her soul, leading her to take over the mantle to find freedom.

Creative Team

The issue features contributions from several high-profile creators:

  • Writers: James Robinson, Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, and John Ostrander.
  • Artists: J.H. Williams III (who also provided the cover art), Mike Mayhew, Wade Von Grawbadger, Georges Jeanty, Drew Geraci, and Ryan Sook.
