Teen Titans Annual #1, published on April 1, 2015, is a significant issue in the New 52 era that focuses on the controversial return of Superboy (Kon-El) to the team. The issue is notable for being co-written by Tom King (in one of his early DC projects) and regular series writer Will Pfeifer.

Plot Synopsis

  • Superboy’s Return: The story begins with Superboy waking up in Fairfax, Virginia, surrounded by the bodies of 21 murdered people. This immediate "trail of destruction" puts him at the center of a global news scandal.
  • The Martian Manhunter's Intervention: The police take Superboy into custody, where he is interrogated by Martian Manhunter (disguised as Detective John Jones). J'onn J'onzz is particularly enraged because the victims were actually displaced Durlans—alien refugees hiding on Earth.
  • A New Ally: A surviving Durlan named Ra’ut L’lwer (Ruth) intervenes, helping Superboy escape because she believes he is innocent. In the process, she absorbs Martian Manhunter's powers, taking on a form that heavily resembles Miss Martian.
  • The Team Split: The Teen Titans are fundamentally divided over whether to help their old friend. Red Robin (Tim Drake), Raven, Bunker, and Beast Boy believe in his innocence and take him into hiding. Conversely, Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark) and the new Power Girl (Tanya Spears) refuse to aid a suspected mass murderer.
  • The Ending: As Red Robin’s faction goes underground, Wonder Girl and Power Girl align themselves with Manchester Black, who reveals he has been training his own secret team of Titans (including Klarion the Witch Boy and a new Kid Flash) to bring Superboy in.
