The Brave and the Bold (Vol. 2) #1, released in December 1991, is the start of a six-issue miniseries that shifts away from the traditional Batman team-up format. Written by Mike Grell and Mike Baron, the story is a gritty, politically charged thriller featuring Green Arrow (Oliver Queen), The Question (Vic Sage), and The Butcher (John Butcher).

Plot and Themes

The first issue centers on three separate investigations in the Pacific Northwest that eventually collide:

  • Green Arrow is tracking an unusual alliance between a radical Native American separatist group and the Irish Republican Army (IRA).
  • The Butcher is working undercover to infiltrate the Amerind terrorist organization.
  • The Question is investigating the broader implications of these extremists joining forces.
  • Black Canary also appears, investigating the brutal murder of a lumber industry executive in Seattle.

The story explores complex social and political issues, specifically the tensions within Native American tribes regarding how to balance cultural traditions with modern progress, and how outside forces exploit these internal conflicts for profit.

Creative Team & Format
