The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men # 1 September 2011 was a key title in DC Comics' New 52 reboot. Written by Gail Simone and Ethan Van Sciver with art by Yildiray Cinar, this series significantly reimagined the Firestorm mythology by introducing multiple Firestorms and a global conspiracy.

The issue reintroduces Ronnie Raymond (a high school football star) and Jason Rusch (a brilliant student journalist) as classmates who initially dislike one another.

  • The Firestorm Protocol: The story reveals a global arms race involving "The Firestorm Protocol," a top-secret experiment to create nuclear super-soldiers.
  • The Incident: When a ruthless mercenary group called the Dog Team attacks their high school to recover a "magnetic bottle" containing the "God Particle," Jason activates the device to save them.
  • The Transformation: Instead of fusing into one being, both Ronnie and Jason are transformed into separate Firestorms.
  • The Fury: During a heated argument while in their new forms, the two heroes accidentally merge into a towering, mindless, and destructive giant known as Fury.
  • A Global Scale: This version established that there are other "Firestorms" around the world acting as nuclear deterrents for different nations.
  • Martin Stein: Unlike previous iterations where Professor Martin Stein was the "voice" in Ronnie's head, he is initially missing in this series, appearing only as a mysterious figure tied to the super-science conspiracy.
  • Tone: The series is noted for its darker, more aggressive tone compared to the original 1978 run, focusing on international intrigue and body horror.
