The Incredible Hulk # 376 published in December 1990, is a pivotal psychological issue written by Peter David and illustrated by Dale Keown. Titled "Personality Conflict," it is renowned for the dramatic internal war between the Savage (green) Hulk and the Grey Hulk personas for control of Bruce Banner's mind and body.
"Personality Conflict"
The story picks up with Bruce, Betty, and Rick Jones returning to Rick's place in Reno. The central conflict arises from the intense struggle happening within Bruce's psyche:
- The Internal War: The two dominant Hulk personalities—the Savage (green) Hulk and the Grey Hulk (Joe Fixit)—hate each other and are in an all-out battle for dominance inside Bruce's mind. The Grey Hulk had previously trapped the Green Hulk, but the latter breaks free in this issue.
- Physical Manifestation: As the internal conflict escalates, it manifests physically in the real world in a grotesque and unusual way. Bruce's body begins to warp and change, with different limbs taking on the characteristics (color, size, strength) of either the green or grey Hulk, while his face remains Bruce Banner's.
- Self-Harm: The monstrous, unstable amalgamation of Banner is driven to smash through walls and even begins choking itself in a desperate attempt to gain control.
- Betty's Intervention: Outside, Rick, Betty, and Marlo Chandler (Joe Fixit's former girlfriend) witness the bizarre spectacle. Betty pushes through the police line, pleading with Bruce to assert his own will.
- Banner Triumphant: Inspired by Betty's plea and pushed to his limits, Bruce finds his strength of will and internally bowls over both of his warring alter-egos. He collapses and reverts back to human form, proving that "Banner is the strongest one there is".
- Doc Samson Arrives: The issue ends with the arrival of Doc Samson, who is there to begin therapy aimed at merging the different personalities into a single, cohesive being.
