Invincible #1, originally published in January 2003 by Image Comics, is the debut issue of the long-running superhero series created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Cory Walker. It introduces Mark Grayson, a 17-year-old high school student who begins to develop superpowers inherited from his father, the world's most powerful hero, Omni-Man.

Plot and Key Characters

The debut issue focuses on Mark's transition from a typical teenager to a fledgling superhero.

  • The Manifestation of Powers: Mark first discovers his superhuman strength while at his part-time job at "Burger Mart," when he accidentally launches a heavy trash bag into the sky.
  • The Superhero Persona: After receiving a custom suit from the tailor Art Rosenbaum, Mark adopts the name "Invincible," a moniker inspired by an offhand remark from his high school principal.
  • Family Dynamics: The issue establishes a grounded domestic life, with Mark casually telling his parents about his new abilities over dinner. It also introduces his mother, Debbie Grayson, who handles the family's superpowered life with surprising normalcy.
  • Wider Universe: While the first issue is relatively low-stakes, it introduces the Guardians of the Globe, the premiere superhero team of that world.
