The Legend of Wonder Woman #1 (2016) is a standalone, critically acclaimed retelling of Princess Diana's origins. Written and penciled by Renae De Liz with inks and colors by her husband Ray Dillon, this issue launched in print format in January 2016 following a highly popular digital-first weekly run. Unlike the main continuity Wonder Woman books of 2016, this Eisner Award-nominated miniseries is heavily inspired by William Moulton Marston's Golden Age roots, filtering them through a lush, timeless fantasy lens.

Detailed Plot & Premise

  • The Mythological Prelude: The debut issue takes a step back to chronicle the literal birth of the cosmos, the fall of the Titans, and the rise of the Olympian Gods.
  • The Quest for Motherhood: It details the history of the Amazon civilization and focuses on Queen Hippolyta. Despite gaining eternal life, Hippolyta yearns deeply for a child of her own—eventually molding Diana from clay, who is granted life as a gift from the gods.
  • A Haunted Paradise: As Princess Diana grows into a serious, highly observant child, she realizes all is not well on Paradise Island. She feels a preternatural, dark magic shifting beneath the surface of Themyscira, which begins manifesting as horrifying monsters attacking their borders.
  • The Forbidden Quest: Defying her mother’s strict protective rules, a young Diana sneaks past the city walls to investigate the corruption. Deep in the wilderness, she encounters a dangerous environment and crosses paths with the legendary Amazon warrior general, Alcippe, who will eventually become her secret combat mentor.
