The Lobo Gallery # 1 (September 1995), subtitled Portraits of a Bastich, is a prestige-format, one-shot comic book that serves as a high-quality art showcase for DC’s "Main Man". Rather than a narrative story, the issue is a curated collection of full-color pin-ups and portraits featuring various artistic interpretations of Lobo.

Content and Structure

The comic is designed in a square-bound, "gallery" style to highlight the visual evolution and popularity of the character during the mid-90s.

  • Introduction: The issue opens with a black-and-white introduction page featuring a humorous note from writer Alan Grant (dated June 1995) and a gag image of Lobo in medieval stocks.
  • The Art: The interior consists primarily of glossy, full-page splash images and portraits. These depictions range from Lobo’s classic biker aesthetic to exaggerated, muscular action poses featuring chains, weapons, and cosmic backdrops.

Creative Team

The gallery features contributions from an extensive list of legendary comic book artists, many of whom were "blackmailed" by the editor into participating, according to the issue's humorous credits.

  • Cover Artist: Simon Bisley, who provided the iconic painted cover of Lobo riding a massive motorcycle over a fiery street.
  • Contributing Artists: The volume includes art by John Byrne, Mike Zeck, Kyle Baker, Keith Giffen, Mike Wieringo, Denys Cowan, Darryl Banks, and Val Semeiks, among dozens of others.
