The Micronauts Annual # 1, published by Marvel Comics in 1979, is a "King-Size" issue that presents three origin stories for the main characters before they formed the team, all featuring art by the legendary Steve Ditko.

The annual issue contains three separate stories written by Bill Mantlo, each shedding light on the backstory of a key Micronaut.

  • "Timestream": This story follows Commander Arcturus Rann and his robot co-pilot Biotron during the final day of Rann's thousand-year deep space voyage in suspended animation. They arrive on "Paradise III," a world obsessed with perfection, where they encounter the mysterious Galactic Defender and discover a dark secret about the planet's history and its automated preservation system.
  • "Coup!": This segment details the day Baron Karza seizes power on the Homeworld through a violent coup d'état. Tired of the pretense that the royal family still rules, Karza attacks and kills the king and queen during a gladiatorial event. Princess Mari (Marionette) and her brother Prince Argon manage to escape the chaos, marking the beginning of their life as fugitives and rebels.
  • "Arena of Death": This tale focuses on Acroyear and Bug as they are forced to fight for their lives in Baron Karza's gladiatorial games. A mysterious Shadow Priest in the stands signals his allegiance to the rebellion and helps them survive the arena's dangers, laying the groundwork for their eventual alliance with the other heroes.

These stories build the foundational mythology of the Microverse and set the stage for the ongoing series, which sees the Micronauts battle Baron Karza for the freedom of their universe.
