The Mighty Thor # 404 1989 NM-

The Mighty Thor # 404 (June 1989), written by Tom DeFalco with art by Ron Frenz, is the beginning of a storyline where Annihilus invades Asgard from the Negative Zone, draining the life force of Asgardians to power his Cosmic Control Rod. 

• Judgment and Return: The story begins with Thor returning to Asgard to face the judgment of Odin after recent events.
• A Lurking Terror: Shortly after, Thor and the Warriors Three hear screams and discover the corpses of several Asgardians who have had their life force completely drained.
• Annihilus's Invasion: Following a tunnel below the city, Thor and Balder discover numerous Asgardians trapped in cocoons, drained by the villain Annihilus. Annihilus reveals his plan: he intends to absorb Odin's life force to destroy all intelligent life and make himself immortal.
• Battle and Capture: Thor confronts Annihilus, whose Cosmic Control Rod is powerful enough to match Mjolnir's energy output. The battle is cut short as the entirety of Asgard begins to shake and enter the Negative Zone. Thor is buried under a collapsing tunnel during the transition, leaving Balder and the others to face Annihilus as Odin remains a prisoner. 

Backup Story: "Tales of Asgard"

The issue also includes a "Tales of Asgard" backup story, where Odin sends Thor on a separate quest to the land of Always Night to find Ulagg the Grand Enchanter. Ulagg refuses the summons, leading to a conflict with Thor and his companions.
