The Mighty Thor # 435 (August 1991), written by Tom DeFalco with art by Ron Frenz, is a two-part story conclusion titled "The Power of Thor!" It focuses on the current Thor, Eric Masterson, journeying to the Negative Zone to rescue Odin from the villain Annihilus.
- Journey to the Negative Zone: Eric Masterson, who is currently wielding Mjolnir as Thor, travels with the Asgardians Balder and Sif into the Negative Zone, the domain of the villain Annihilus, to rescue the captive Odin.
- The Warrior's Code Conflict: The Asgardians are surprised and sometimes dismayed by Eric's fighting tactics, as he does "whatever is necessary to win" rather than adhering strictly to their traditional warrior's code.
- Confronting Annihilus: They discover that Annihilus has captured Odin and is using the All-Father's life-essence to charge his Cosmic Control Rod, making himself functionally immortal.
- The Battle and Aftermath: Thor battles Annihilus while Sif and Balder move Odin to safety. Thor hurls Mjolnir at the Cosmic Control Rod, causing it to explode and seemingly destroying Annihilus in the process.
- Return to Earth: With Odin freed, Heimdall thanks Eric for his service and teleports him back to Earth, reminding him of his role as guardian of Midgard. Back on Earth, Eric is fired from his architect job due to his frequent, unexplained absences as Thor. The issue ends with a mystery man searching for Eric Masterson.
