"In Which We Burn"

The issue is famous for its complex, non-linear storytelling technique, told in reverse order with an eight-panel grid layout.

  • The Assassination: The central mystery revolves around the assassination of the U.S. President, Harley, who is killed by the superhero Peacemaker in the opening/closing scene.
  • The Plan: The story reveals that President Harley orchestrated his own assassination as part of a grand, bizarre plan for world peace. He intended for Captain Atom to bring him back to life, creating a "miracle" to unite the American people.
  • The Interruption: The plan goes wrong when the Vice President, Eden, takes office and, seeking to abolish superheroes, ensures Harley is not resurrected.
  • The Investigation: Characters like The Question, Blue Beetle, and Nightshade attempt to uncover the truth behind the conspiracy and the shadowy figure operating in the background.
  • The Question: A Rorschach-like detective driven to find the truth, even if it hurts his friends.
  • Blue Beetle (Ted Kord): The tech-savvy hero of this reality.
  • Captain Atom: The powerful, god-like hero whose powers are tied to a cosmic force and who is key to the resurrection plan.
  • Peacemaker (Chris Smith): The highly trained soldier who is manipulated into killing the President.
  • Writer: Grant Morrison.
