The 'Nam # 1, published in December 1986, launched a groundbreaking Marvel series that chronicled the Vietnam War in real-time, with each issue representing roughly one month of the conflict.
"First Patrol"
The debut issue introduces PFC Edward Marks, a "green" soldier who arrives in Vietnam in 1966 straight from basic training.
- Arrival and Assignment: After a difficult introduction to military life and a misunderstanding with a top sergeant, Marks is assigned to a platoon led by Sgt. Polkow.
- The First Patrol: Marks ventures into the field for his first patrol, where his unit is ambushed by the Việt Cộng in a local village.
- Harsh Realities: The issue depicts the visceral shock of war; Marks is visibly shaken after seeing his first dead body. The platoon later encounters a hidden bunker and tunnel system after an armored column is hit by a booby trap.
- Brief Respite: On returning to base, the soldiers watch the movie Major Dundee while under rocket attack. Marks's veteran friend, Mike Albergo, reassures him that the VC won't hit the screen because they enjoy the movies, too.
The series was noted for its authenticity, as many members of the creative team were military veterans.
