The New Warriors # 26, published in August 1992, concludes the "Nothing But the Truth" storyline, focusing on Marvel Boy's (Vance Astrovik) conviction for manslaughter and the team's failed attempt to free him from a prison transport.

The issue, titled "The Next Step", deals with the immediate aftermath of the jury's verdict, where Vance Astrovik is found guilty of negligently killing his abusive father with his mutant powers.

  • The Verdict: Vance is convicted and sentenced to prison.
  • The Rescue Attempt: Fellow New Warriors members Nova, Namorita, and Firestar intercept the prison transport convoy (staffed by Guardsmen) to break Vance out.
  • A Principled Refusal: When they succeed in stopping the transport, Vance refuses to escape, stating that he wants to serve his sentence and face the consequences of his actions. He believes it is "the next step" in taking responsibility.
  • Farewell and Love Confession: Firestar confesses her love for Vance one last time before he willingly returns to the transport to begin his time in the Vault, a supervillain prison.
  • Team Changes: The issue also features Rage being kicked out of the Avengers (for helping the Warriors steal a Quinjet in a prior incident), and Speedball invites him to join the New Warriors. Night Thrasher begins designing a new costume to move past his painful family history.

This issue marks a significant turning point for the characters, leading to Vance's eventual parole and name change to Justice, and the start of artist Darick Robertson's run on the title.
