The Phantom Stranger # 0 September 5, 2012 (Volume 4) was a pivotal release in DC's "New 52" initiative. It is part of the Trinity of Sin storyline and is notable for providing the first definitive origin for the character in DC’s modern continuity.

This issue establishes the Phantom Stranger as Judas Iscariot, one of the three "most egregious sinners" known as the Trinity of Sin. 

• The Punishment: After betraying Jesus Christ, Judas is judged by the Council of Wizards. He is condemned to wander the Earth forever as an agent of a higher power (The Voice).
• The Artifacts: He is marked by a necklace of 30 silver coins—the price of his betrayal—which are branded into his skin. He also wears a robe belonging to the man he betrayed.
• The Mission: The Stranger is tasked with guiding or influencing individuals to fulfill cosmic destinies. In this issue, he is directed to Detective Jim Corrigan, leading to the events that transform Corrigan into The Spectre. With this act, one of the silver coins falls from his neck, signaling he is one step closer to redemption.
