The Punisher # 1 1998 VF+

The Punisher # 1, published in November 1998, is the start of a controversial four-issue limited series under the Marvel Knights imprint. This run is famous for shifting the character from a grounded crime fighter into a supernatural "Angel of Vengeance".

The story begins after Frank Castle has committed suicide, but his soul is not at rest. 

• Resurrection: Frank is pulled back from the grave by the angel Gadriel to act as a celestial soldier in a war between Heaven and Hell.
• New Status Quo: He is reborn with a glowing arcane symbol on his forehead and is functionally immortal. Instead of his typical firearms, he uses supernatural "holy guns" that shoot celestial energy capable of killing both demons and humans.
• The Mission: His new war is framed as a form of purgatory—fighting crime not just for revenge, but for the redemption of his own soul.
