The Punisher 2099 #1 is the landmark debut issue of Marvel's futuristic vigilante series, released on February 1, 1993. Written by Pat Mills and Tony Skinner with gritty cyberpunk artwork by Tom Morgan and Jimmy Palmiotti, this premiere issue introduced a brutal new take on the mantle of retribution.
The original comic stood out on stands due to its distinctive metallic blue foil-stamped cover.
The Origin of Jake Gallows
Set in the corporate-dominated, cyberpunk dystopia of Nueva York in the year 2099, the story introduces Jacob "Jake" Gallows, a high-ranking enforcement officer for the private "Public Eye" police force. In this era, police protection is a corporate commodity, and justice can literally be bought out.
Jake's life is shattered when his family is brutally gunned down in a park by Kron Stone, the sadistic, ultra-wealthy son of Alchemax executive Tyler Stone. Because of Kron's high social standing and corporate connections, the courts sentence him to little more than a minor financial fine and mandatory behavior therapy.
Disillusioned by a legal system where murder is just paperwork, a grieving Jake discovers an ancient artifact from the heroic age: the long-lost War Journal of Frank Castle. Inspired by the original Punisher's final written entry instructing whoever found the book to continue his crusade, Jake builds a high-tech arsenal, abandons his badge, and undergoes a violent transformation into the new Punisher.
Futuristic Arsenal & Tech
Unlike Frank Castle, who relied on ballistic weapons, Jake Gallows takes on 2099's corporate syndicates using advanced, over-the-top technology:
