The Sandman: The Dream Hunters # 1 is the first issue of a four-part comic book miniseries adaptation of Neil Gaiman's original 1999 prose novella. The story, set in ancient Japan, centers on a love affair between a humble Buddhist monk and a magical, shape-shifting fox spirit (kitsune).
- The Wager: The story begins with a fox and a badger making a bet to see who can successfully drive a solitary young monk away from his temple on a mountain.
-
A Love Story Blooms: The fox takes the form of a beautiful woman to trick the monk into leaving, but instead finds herself falling in love with him. The monk, seeing through her disguise but still caring for her, allows her to stay at the temple.
-
A Demonic Plot: The fox overhears demons discussing a plot by their master, a wealthy and paranoid Master of Yin-Yang (onmyōji), to kill the monk in his dreams to gain his inner peace.
-
The King of All Night's Dreaming: The fox is unable to warn the monk directly due to a curse that would kill her if she spoke of the plot. Desperate to save the man she loves, she makes a sacrifice to gain an audience with Morpheus, the King of All Night's Dreaming (Dream of the Endless), seeking his aid.
The miniseries issue (and the novella it adapts) can be read as a standalone story, independent of the main Sandman comic book series.
