The Savage Hawkman # 1, released on September 28, 2011, served as the character's debut in DC Comics' New 52 relaunch. Written by Tony S. Daniel with art by Philip Tan, the series introduces a more brutal, "savage" version of the hero whose Nth metal armor is now bonded directly to his physiology.
The story begins with Carter Hall attempting to retire from his life as a superhero. He travels to the woods of upstate New York, douses his Hawkman gear in alcohol, and sets it on fire to "bury" his past. However, the fire transforms into a massive hawk-shaped flame that engulfs him, and he later awakens at home with his burns mysteriously healed.
Carter is soon called to a laboratory by a colleague, Professor Ziegler, who has recovered a sunken alien spacecraft. During the investigation, a vial of extracted alien fluid breaks and possesses a technician, transforming him into a black, goopy monster called Morphicius.
As Carter attempts to fight back with an axe, his skin ripples and he finds himself once again clad in Hawkman armor, which has seemingly merged with his body. The issue ends with a cliffhanger as Morphicius—revealed as an energy vampire—begins to drain Carter's life force.
