The Spectacular Spider-Man #179, titled "Wounds," was published by Marvel Comics in August 1991. Written by J.M. DeMatteis with art by Sal Buscema, it is the second chapter of the dark and psychological six-part story arc, "The Child Within".
Plot Summary
The issue continues the deep dive into the traumas of both Peter Parker and his enemies:
- Vermin's Past: The creature known as Vermin (Edward Whelan) explores his newfound freedom by visiting his parents' home in the suburbs. Through therapy sessions with Dr. Ashley Kafka, it is revealed that Edward suffered severe childhood sexual abuse, which fueled his transformation and psychological instability.
- The Confrontation: Spider-Man intercepts Vermin at Dr. Kafka’s office. Despite Spider-Man's aggressive stance, Kafka pleads with him to stop, believing she can still reach the man inside the monster.
- The Goblin's Return: Parallel to the Vermin storyline, Harry Osborn continues his mental decline. While he tries to maintain a normal life with his wife Liz and son Normie, he is increasingly haunted by the memory of his father, Norman Osborn, signaling the imminent return of the Green Goblin.
