The Spectacular Spider-Man #32, published in July 1979, features the story "A Zoo Story" (often colloquially referred to by its cover theme, "Rage of the Reptile"). This Bronze Age issue is historically significant for introducing two long-standing characters to the Spider-Man mythos.

Plot Summary

Written by Bill Mantlo with art by Jim Mooney, the issue marks a transitional phase for Peter Parker as he begins graduate school:

  • The Iguana's Debut: While investigating a mysterious flash of light at Empire State University, Spider-Man discovers an unconscious Dr. Curt Connors (The Lizard). He soon encounters a new man-sized reptilian threat: The Iguana.
  • A Case of Mistaken Identity: Unlike the Lizard, this creature is a literal iguana that was transformed into a humanoid monster after being accidentally struck by Connors' Enervator device, absorbing the doctor's memories and powers.
  • New Supporting Cast: The issue also marks the first appearance of Marcy Kane, a fellow teacher's assistant who becomes a recurring (and often suspicious) figure in Peter's life.
