The Star Wars #1 (2013), published by Dark Horse Comics on September 4, 2013, is the first issue of an eight-part miniseries that adapts George Lucas's original 1974 rough-draft screenplay. This series allows fans to experience an alternate version of the Star Wars universe as it was first envisioned, featuring familiar names but radically different character designs and plot points.

Plot and Setting

The story is set in a galaxy where the Jedi-Bendu, ancient protectors of the Empire, are nearly extinct and hunted by the rival Knights of Sith.

  • The Conflict: The "New Empire" is launching a final offensive against the last hold-out world of the Jedi rebellion, Aquilae.
  • The Hero's Request: An older, dying Jedi named Kane Starkiller arrives on Aquilae with his son, Annikin. He begs his old friend, the wizened General Luke Skywalker, to take Annikin as an apprentice and finish his training.
  • A Different Vader: Darth Vader appears not as a Sith Lord, but as a high-ranking Imperial General who is still largely human.

Core Characters

The issue features the first comic appearances of several "alternate" versions of iconic characters:

  • General Luke Skywalker: A gray-bearded, veteran Jedi General and war hero.
  • Annikin Starkiller: The young, headstrong protagonist of this version of the saga.
  • Han Solo: A massive, green-skinned alien Ureallian rather than a human smuggler.
  • Kane Starkiller: Annikin’s father, a "cyborg" Jedi-Bendu who is more machine than man.
  • Princess Leia: A princess of the kingdom of Aquilae who is preparing to leave for college.
