The Thing # 24, published by Marvel Comics in June 1985, is titled "One Man's Prison!". The story features an off-the-cuff adventure for Ben Grimm as he leaves the Fantastic Four and unexpectedly crosses paths with the Rhino and the Miracle Man on a bus ride to Project Pegasus.

Having officially left the Fantastic Four, Ben Grimm, the Thing, decides to travel to the research facility known as Project Pegasus. He boards a cross-country bus, hoping for some quiet time to himself. Unbeknownst to him, the villainous Rhino is also at the New York City Port Authority, being loaded onto a different transport for a prison transfer, hoping his good behavior will lead to a way to remove his costume that is bonded to his skin.

The primary conflict begins when another villain, the Miracle Man, boards the same bus as Ben. The Miracle Man, a hypnotist and wielder of mind-over-matter powers, recognizes the Thing and sees an opportunity to regain his lost powers or find an ally.

The Miracle Man uses his powers to control the other passengers, causing a chaotic confrontation that forces the Rhino's transport to stop. A battle breaks out between the Thing and the Rhino. As the fight escalates, the Miracle Man tries to hypnotize the Rhino as well, but the Rhino resists due to his strong desire to go straight and become human again.

The conflict ends abruptly when a seemingly random "hippie" passenger pulls out an automatic weapon and fatally shoots the Miracle Man, revealing himself to be the first Scourge of the Underworld, an assassin who targets super-villains. The Rhino goes into a berserk rage, and the Thing must calm him down and convince him to surrender.
