The Transformers: Generation 2 # 1 (November 1993) is the beginning of a new Marvel series that introduces a third, mysterious faction of Cybertronians and focuses on the idea that the Autobot/Decepticon war has become a "war without end," with both factions having lost their original purpose. The issue sets up a grand, cosmic-scale conflict that threatens all of Cybertronian existence.

"War Without End!"

The story, a direct continuation of the original Marvel run, picks up with the Decepticons in exile and the Autobots enjoying a temporary reprieve on Earth. Optimus Prime is troubled by apocalyptic visions of a "Swarm" that consumes everything in its path.

  • The New Foe: A group of Autobots led by Grimlock encounters a mysterious and aggressive new group of Transformers in deep space. These new Cybertronians, led by the charismatic and ruthless Jhiaxus (a new character created for the comic), have been systematically "colonizing" and destroying worlds.
  • A "United" Race: Jhiaxus's faction claims that the Autobot/Decepticon conflict is an obsolete "first generation" struggle and that all Cybertronians should be united in their goal of galactic expansion. They do not recognize the terms "Autobot" or "Decepticon," seeing them as archaic.
  • Disgust and Resolve: Optimus Prime and the Autobots are disgusted to find that their race, in this new form, has become a merciless, conquering empire.
  • The Fight: Grimlock and his team are captured by Jhiaxus's superior forces, and the new Decepticons blast the Autobot base. The issue ends with the Autobots resolving to fight this new, overwhelmingly powerful Cybertronian Empire, while the reader is also made aware of the coming of the ominous, all-consuming "Swarm" as an even greater threat.

The Transformers: Generation 2 #1 (which featured a shiny, gatefold foil cover) was created by:
