The Transformers: The Movie # 1 (December 1986, though released concurrently with the film in August) is the first part of a three-issue comic adaptation of the 1986 animated film, focusing on the Decepticon assault on Autobot City on Earth and the arrival of the planet-eating robot Unicron.

"The Planet Eater!"

The issue, an adaptation by Ralph Macchio with art by Don Perlin, Ian Akin, and Brian Garvey, is set in the "future" year of 2005, twenty years after the second season of the TV show.

  • Decepticon Invasion: The Decepticons, led by Megatron, launch a surprise, devastating attack on the Autobots' Earth base, Autobot City. Many established characters, including Ironhide, Prowl, and Ratchet, are killed in the initial attack to make way for the new toy line characters.
  • Optimus Prime's Return: The Autobots send a distress call, and the hero of the war, Optimus Prime, arrives in a battle shuttle and joins the fight with the Dinobots.
  • Final Duel: Optimus Prime and Megatron engage in a brutal, one-on-one duel that leaves both leaders mortally wounded.
  • The Matrix of Leadership: Before he dies, Optimus Prime passes the Autobot Matrix of Leadership to the new commander, Ultra Magnus.
  • A New Threat: Meanwhile, the planet-sized Transformer, Unicron, is introduced as he begins to consume planets and moons. The Decepticons, deeming their injured as excess weight, jettison them into space, where Unicron encounters them and makes a deal with the dying Megatron to be reformatted into a new, more powerful form: Galvatron, his herald, to destroy the Matrix.
  • Writer: Ralph Macchio
  • Penciler: Don Perlin
  • Inkers: Ian Akin and Brian Garvey
