The Unwritten #1, published by Vertigo, is about a man named Tom Taylor, the real-life inspiration for a globally popular "Harry Potter-ish" boy-wizard novel series, whose life is upended when a scandal suggests he might actually be the fictional character brought to life. 

• Life in the Shadow of Fiction: The issue introduces Tom Taylor, a Z-level celebrity who makes a living attending fan conventions and signing autographs as the "real" Tommy Taylor, the hero of a 13-volume fantasy series written by his missing father, Wilson Taylor. Tom is generally unhappy with this arrangement and the constant comparisons to his fictional counterpart.
• The Scandal: During a Q&A panel at a convention, a woman named Lizzie Hexam publicly challenges Tom's identity, providing evidence that his life is a fabrication, including that his official identification number belongs to a deceased woman and there is no record of his birth.
• Conspiracy and Mystery: This accusation creates an online firestorm and media frenzy, with fans speculating that Tom is the fictional character made flesh, a scenario hinted at in the final novel. Tom's world quickly falls apart as he is hounded by the public and later framed for a series of murders.
• A Dangerous Group: Tom's situation attracts the attention of a mysterious and deadly group (a "cabal") that has been secretly monitoring him his entire life.
• The Quest for Truth: To clear his name and uncover the truth about his own origins and his father's disappearance, Tom embarks on a worldwide journey, beginning the series' central mystery about the power of stories and the intersection of fiction and reality.
