The Walking Dead: Michonne Special #1 is a 2012 one-shot comic that reveals the origin of the iconic katana-wielding survivor and her two "pet" walkers.
Story Synopsis
The special features a six-page origin story, "Michonne's Story," originally published in Playboy Magazine.
- The Outbreak: Michonne is a lawyer who flees the initial chaos to reach her boyfriend, Mike, and his friend, Terry.
- The Turning Point: Mike is bitten by a walker early on. While Michonne scavenges for food—and finds her signature katana in a neighbor's house—both men succumb to the infection and turn while she is away.
- The "Pets": Upon returning to find them reanimated, Michonne realizes walkers do not attack one another. To escape her overrun street, she cuts off Mike and Terry's jaws and arms, chaining them to her as camouflage.
