Thor # 1 (2007), written by J. Michael Straczynski and drawn by Olivier Coipel, marks the return of the God of Thunder to the Marvel Universe after the events of Ragnarok. The issue focuses on the re-establishment of Thor's connection to his mortal identity, Dr. Donald Blake, and the decision to break the cycle of death and rebirth that bound the Asgardian gods.
- Thor in the Void: The story begins with Thor floating in a void of nonexistence, reflecting on his past adventures and the ending of the continuous cycle of Ragnarok. The cycle was broken when he allowed Ragnarok to happen without interference, ensuring a true end instead of a temporary pause.
- The Return of Donald Blake: Suddenly, Thor feels a strong summons and is surprised to find it comes from his long-thought-dead human alter ego, Dr. Donald Blake. Blake, who has experience with the afterlife after being erased from existence by Odin's power, urges Thor to return to the mortal world, Midgard, as its fate is in peril.
- Rebirth and Choice: Blake explains that the Odinpower is gone with Odin's death, so the gods can now choose to exist or not, free from the old cycles. Thor fights through a host of ethereal demons in the void and, after some initial hesitation, grasps Mjolnir (which appears in the void) and transforms back into his full godlike form, choosing to return to life.
- Arrival in Oklahoma: On Earth, Thor's hammer Mjolnir had fallen to a field in rural Oklahoma, creating a crater and summoning him back when touched by a local. Dr. Donald Blake is reborn on Earth, walking along a highway until he reaches the small town of Broxton, Oklahoma, where he rents a room at a local inn.
- The Thunder God Reappears: Once in his room, Blake strikes his walking stick (which is actually Mjolnir in disguise) on the floor, calling down a massive lightning bolt that restores the full power and presence of Thor, alerting the town to his return. The stage is set for Asgard to be rebuilt on Earth and the other gods to be sought out and restored in a world still grappling with the aftermath of the "Civil War" event.
