Thor: The Trial of Thor # 1 is a 2009 one-shot comic book that details a grim period for the God of Thunder, where he is accused of murdering innocent Asgardians in the aftermath of a war with the Frost Giants.

The story takes place after nine months of exhausting warfare. The Frost Giants have retreated, but the conflict has left its mark on Thor.

  • The Accusation: Balder the Brave is a direct eyewitness to what appears to be Thor, seemingly driven mad by battle fatigue, slaughtering innocent Asgardians with his hammer, Mjolnir.
  • The Hunt: Odin initially dismisses the claims, but after more killings, he orders an arrest. The Warriors Three (Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg) intervene and help the resisting Thor escape Asgard, believing him guilty but acting out of loyalty.
  • The Revelation: In exile, the Warriors Three inform Thor that his victims had traces of pure Uru in their wounds. Thor realizes his own battle-scarred Mjolnir is no longer pure Uru, meaning the killer wields a perfect duplicate.
  • The Confrontation: Thor tracks the origin to the Dwarves of Nidavellir, who, in league with the Frost Giants, created a Thor doppelgänger specifically to frame and destroy the original Thor. Thor battles and kills his double, proving his innocence.

The events of this issue lead directly into the 2010 one-shot Thor: The Rage of Thor #1, where a resentful and bitter Thor briefly exiles himself to Earth and lives among mortals.
