Titans Sell-Out Special #1, published in November 1992, is a satirical one-shot comic written by Marv Wolfman that explores the commercialization of the Titans. Following a series of public relations disasters and a legal battle with Councilwoman Elizabeth Alderman, the team finds themselves deeply in debt and decides to license their images for profit.

Plot Summary

  • Financial Crisis: After returning from a battle against Lord Chaos to find Titans Island and the U.G. Pyramid destroyed, the team is served a subpoena by Councilwoman Alderman.
  • The Decision to "Sell Out": To generate income, the Titans and the Team Titans approve a line of action figures, a feature film, and a children's animated series titled "The Teeny Titans".
  • Cartoon Debacle: The issue features a Meta-commentary where the heroes attend a screening of their own cartoon, which features exaggerated, silly versions of themselves (e.g., "Nighty Night," "Beesty," and "Kitty Litt'r"). Horrified by the lack of creative control and the final product, they eventually refuse to be further attached to the project.
  • Continuity: The story takes place immediately after Team Titans #3 and continues in Deathstroke: The Terminator #17 and The New Titans #93.
