Black Widow #1 April 28, 1999, launched a three-issue limited series under the Marvel Knights imprint. Titled "The Itsy-Bitsy Spider: Uninvited," this issue is a significant key for featuring the first full appearance of Yelena Belova, the second woman to take on the Black Widow mantle.

The story follows Natasha Romanoff as she is recruited by both the Pentagon and Russian intelligence to investigate a dangerous new bio-weapon developed by Dr. Didier Ines in Rhapastan. 

• The Rival: Natasha is shadowed by Yelena Belova, a elite graduate of the Red Room who believes herself to be the superior spy. Yelena seeks to replace Natasha as Russia’s premier agent and is determined to take the "Black Widow" title by force.
• Conflict: While investigating the bio-weapon, the two cross paths when Yelena is captured by guards. Despite Natasha helping her, Yelena immediately turns on her, leading to a deadly confrontation and a chase across the desert.
• Cameo: The issue features a guest appearance by Matt Murdock (Daredevil).
