Ultimate Iron Man II # 1 December 2007 (cover dated February 2008) is the first issue of a five-part limited series that continues the "untold origin" of the Ultimate Universe's Tony Stark. It was written by sci-fi novelist Orson Scott Card and illustrated by Pasqual Ferry.

"Part I"

The story picks up following the events of the first Ultimate Iron Man miniseries.

  • Survival: Young Tony Stark has survived a catastrophic explosion during his initial Iron Man trial run. The issue explores his recovery and the next steps for his high-tech development.
  • The Mission: Government agents recruit Tony and his friend James "Rodney" Rhodes for a dangerous assignment: taking out a terrorist training camp specializing in suicide bombers.
  • Family Crisis: The broader narrative arc of the series involves Howard Stark being falsely imprisoned for the murder of his business rival, Zebediah Stane. Tony must use his technological genius and his new "Iron Man" alter-ego to clear his father's name and combat Obadiah Stane, who seeks vengeance.
  • Biological Retcon: This series (along with its predecessor) established a unique and controversial origin where Tony was mutated in the womb. His entire body is composed of neural tissue, making him a super-genius but also leaving him in constant physical pain and granting him high-level regenerative abilities.
  • War Machine: The issue sets the stage for the debut of the Ultimate version of War Machine as Rhodes begins to fit into Tony's plans for a "perfect fighting machine".
  • Continuity Note: Due to the drastic differences between this origin and other Ultimate Marvel titles, these events were later retconned in-universe as a fictional "anime" or "cartoon" commissioned by Tony Stark himself, rather than his true history.
