Ultimate Thor # 1, published in October 2010, is the first issue of a miniseries that provides a definitive origin story for the Ultimate Universe's Thor (Thorlief Golmen), weaving together Norse mythology, World War II history, and modern superhero action.

The issue sets up a narrative that spans three distinct time periods, explaining Thor's history and his connection to the modern world.

  • Ancient Asgard: The story flashes back to eons ago in Asgard, where a war rages between the Asgardians and the Frost Giants. Odin foresees Ragnarok and the end of Asgard. His three sons—Thor, Balder, and Loki—are great warriors. Odin commissions the forging of Mjolnir, the powerful weapon meant to contain Asgard's power and be wielded only by Thor after Odin's death. Loki, in an act of betrayal, steals the sacred Norn Stones, kills Balder, and flees Asgard.
  • World War II: In Niebull, Germany, 1939, Baron Zemo of the Nazis has discovered the access point to the other realms and possesses the Norn Stones. He uses the stones to open the Rainbow Gate and summon an army of Frost Giants, planning a full-scale invasion of Asgard.
  • Modern Day: The story flashes forward to the modern era, where the man known as Thor is in the custody of the European Super Soldier program. He is being examined by Dr. Donald Blake (a separate character from Thor in this universe) and James Braddock, who question his claims of godhood. Thor, still viewed by some as an anarchist or a mentally unstable super-soldier with advanced, god-like equipment, senses Loki's escape from the "Room With No Doors". Meanwhile, Bruce Banner transforms into the Hulk and goes on a rampage in New York. Thor, deciding to finally embrace his heroic destiny, teleports to New York to fight the Hulk, an event that begins his alliance with the Ultimates.
