The Walking Dead #1, published by Image Comics in 2003, is about Sheriff's Deputy Rick Grimes waking from a coma to find the world overrun by the undead (zombies). The issue details his initial survival and his journey to find his family, who he discovers are missing from their home.

The first issue establishes the premise of the entire series, focusing exclusively on Rick Grimes' harrowing experience as he comes to terms with the new, post-apocalyptic world.

  • Waking Nightmare: Rick awakens alone in an abandoned hospital, weak from his coma and previous gunshot wound. He is confused and calls for help, but finds only silence and an empty building.
  • First Encounters: Venturing outside, he discovers a world ravaged by the "walking undead" and narrowly escapes an attack. He makes his way back to his home in Cynthiana, Kentucky, only to find his wife and son gone.
  • Meeting Survivors: He encounters a man named Morgan Jones and his son, Duane, the first living people he meets. Morgan explains the basics of the apocalypse to a disbelieving Rick, mentioning that people were told to head to bigger cities for safety, such as Atlanta.
  • Setting Off: Rick and Morgan stock up on supplies from the deserted police station. Rick then bids farewell to Morgan and Duane, taking a police cruiser and setting off alone toward Atlanta in search of his family.
  • Rick Grimes: The protagonist, a dedicated former police officer and natural leader who must quickly adapt to a brutal new reality.
  • Morgan Jones: The first survivor Rick meets, a middle-aged man who helps explain the situation and provides Rick with supplies.
  • Duane Jones: Morgan's son, who initially mistakes Rick for one of the undead.

The issue sets the stage for the series' core themes of survival, morality, and human nature in a world without government or basic necessities.
