War Machine # 1 (March 1994) is the first issue of James "Rhodey" Rhodes' first ongoing solo series, where he leaves his work with Tony Stark to use the powerful War Machine armor to fight for human rights on a global scale, beginning with a rescue mission in the fictional African dictatorship of Imaya.

"Something to Believe In"

After falling out with Tony Stark, James Rhodes is at a personal crossroads, seeking a worthwhile purpose for his life and the War Machine armor.

  • The Activist: Rhodey's girlfriend introduces him to human rights activist Vincent Cetewayo, who is starting an NGO called Worldwatch and wants to hire Rhodey. While initially reluctant, Rhodey soon learns that Cetewayo has been imprisoned by the insane dictator of Imaya, President Eda Arul.
  • The Mission: When S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers refuse to intervene due to political implications, Rhodey takes matters into his own hands, deciding to go to Imaya as War Machine to rescue Cetewayo, regardless of the international incident he might cause.
  • International Incident: War Machine attacks the capital of Imaya, quickly dismantling their air force. This draws attention from the time-traveling mutant Cable, who knows that War Machine's interference could derail future diplomatic solutions and wants to stop him.
  • Confrontation: War Machine and Cable fight to a standoff. Before a victor can be decided, they are interrupted by the cyborg Deathlok (Michael Collins), who also intends to rescue Cetewayo, setting up a multi-character showdown in a war zone.

War Machine #1 featured a silver foil embossed cover to mark the launch of the series.
